Finally I Get My Bike - Too Bad It's Not In Seoul

Aug 9-15, 2010

Monday this week I got the best news in a while. Emily text me to let me know that my keys had arrived at her place finally, though I was a little upset because they were post dated July 31, instead of around the 15th when he got them. I had given Arthur her address because I was between places at the time of the key mailing mix up and happened to have hers on hand. Excited I swung by her place after work to pick them up and start to formulate ideas of how much I was going to ride it. Unfortunately, thinking about it was as far as I got until the end of the week. With it pouring rain on Tuesday, there was no way I was about to go to Cheonho and stand in the rain waiting for it to get boosted or towed to a shop. I did however go to Alex B's to get my helmet and paperwork, which Arthur left with him. Returning to work, one of my coworkers went to the bike shop next to the school to see what kind of help they might be able to lend to the situation. It turned out that they were willing to retrieve my bike and get it going for around $100, depending on if I needed a new battery or not. Which since Korea doesn't seem to know what battery charging is, I knew I was in for a new one.
Leaving my keys with them, I hoped to see my bike by Wednesday, and after work I headed over to hang out with Lauren for a bit and tell her about my bike. Now here's where every sense of logic gets thrown out the window. As it turned out, the guys from the bike shop went to get my bike and it wasn't there, because the building manager had it towed since it hadn't moved in so long. Thank you very much Arthur and family for sucking so bad at life. I can understand the towing, but when they told me it had been towed to Wonju, a city an hour and fifteen minutes southeast of Seoul I wanted to kill someone. Then on top of that they wanted $180 dollars to bring it back to town and $50 for the original fine. I really had no choice but to pay, since I had no other way to get it back to Seoul, and was in no position to go pick it up myself given that I have to be at work. So giving them copies of all my paperwork and signing a release form giving them the authority to get it, I was assured to have my bike by the end of the week.
After work Wednesday I went to Sincheon to meet up with the group for one last go 'round at Gold Bar III with Doug and Rachel before they left Thursday afternoon. It was a good party that went much later than any of us had anticipated. When it was all over, Blake and I grabbed some McDonald's and went back to crash at his place. I didn't wake up until 1pm Thursday which put me in a bit of a rush to get home cleaned up and to work, but I was able to do it, and enjoyed another long day of sitting around doing nothing. After work i just went home to get some rest from the late nights I had been having, and watched Max Payne, a movie about a vigilante cop.
Feeling well rested on Friday, I got up and puttered about the apartment until it was time for work, and to my surprise, while I was walking to work I saw my bike at the bike shop next to the school. I quickly signed in and went to take a look. The guys at the bike shop saw me and came out to let me know that they had got it running, of course with a new battery; had changed the oil; and fixed some lights. I payed them the rest of the money that I owed them, but they told me they were going to wash it for me and that it would be ready Saturday morning when they opened at nine. This was perfect since we had to be at school Saturday for an Open House Activity Day, which is our way of drumming up business. I returned to school and happily went about teaching the classes I had. After work, again I went home to get some rest since we had to be at the school for 9am the next morning. Being home on a Friday night for the first time in forever, I decided to watch the original Indiana Jones movie, then get some sleep, which was interrupted oddly enough by messages from Lauren who was out of town with friends and bored out of her mind.
Though not happy about it, I got up just after 8 on Saturday and made my way to the school to help set up for the open house, though there wasn't much to do since the office staff had stayed late the night before putting up all the decorations. Including the several dozen balloons I blew up by mouth Friday night. Sure I could have used the pump they had but it just took too long. Anyways, around 10 the first group of kids came in and were separated into the classrooms to play games. After they were done playing the games, in which they earned reward points, they came out to the food market and gift shop to spend their points. My job was to work the gift shop and make sure nobody lifted any prizes, and to let the kids know how many prize points they needed to get certain items. It was utter chaos as the kids rolled in with hands full of food they had gotten. And with no understanding of organizing what they could carry, kids were dropping food all over the floor, themselves, and each other. I even watched one little boy take a half eaten piece of pizza, fold it up, and put it in his pocket when he needed more hand space to check out prizes. As cute as it was, I could only imagine how his mother was going to react when she found it later. When the first group finished at 1130, then second group filed in and it started all over again, though since they were the older group it was a little easier to keep them organized.
Once it was all over at 2pm, we cleaned up the garbage and extra food, then went to have lunch at a shabu-shabu place near the office. From there it was back to the bike shop, where I picked up my bike and took it for the first ride in so long. I only took it as far as home, since I didn't want to push my luck, and I had to rest up for Kate's birthday party. I napped for a couple hours before getting up and getting ready to hit the COEX Intercontinental Hotel weekend wine buffet. The hotel offers the wine and finger food buffet every weekend from 6-9pm for only $25, and it's a great place to hang out with friends in a classier atmosphere before going out on the town for the night. I arrived with Blake around 630, and we quickly found the birthday group, and got in on the conversations. After we were finished at the wine buffet, we went to the only logical place to go.....Gold Bar in Sincheon. In fact, my coworkers Mike and Jean even came out, and saw how awesome/dangerous Gold Bar is. Kate unfortunately felt the night coming to an end sooner than she hoped, and her and Dave had to step out early. The rest of us stayed and partied until the late hours, when once again Blake and I found ourselves at McDonald's eating cheeseburgers at 3am, though this time I split a cab with him and kept on going to my place.
Waking up Sunday to a cheeseburger and alcohol induced stomach ache, I made some phone calls to make sure everyone was still alive, then laid around relaxing until 3pm when I had to get up and make something of my day. I talked to Lauren and asked her if she would like to go out and do something. We agreed on seeing the movie Inception, and were scheduled to meet at the Express Bus terminal at 630. Once we got there it was a bit of a task to find the movie theatre, but eventually we did and booked tickets for the 9pm movie. In the mean time, we headed down to chill at the river and then grabbed some Pizza Hut for dinner. The movie was awesome, and definitely lived up to the hype I had heard about it. It was a good way to end the weekend. : )

Well Hello, and Good-bye

Aug 2-8, 2010

Back from vacation, alive and kicking, I went back to my vacation style work schedule. Though in all honesty, working only half days Mon/Wed, a full day Fri, and not at all Tues/Thurs is areal bummer. It's nice to get paid to do nothing, but when you have to sit around at the office for 8 hours doing nothing, it gets boring quick. At least I had some good vacation stories to share with my students and coworkers, which helped pass sometime for the first few days.
At work on Monday, I got a call from Blake about meeting up in Sillim with him, Dave, and Kate for some drinks and to catch up since we hadn't seem them in a bit. I love Dave and Kate, so I told him I would be there right after I got out. I met up with them at a bar where they already had some beer and soju ordered, and we proceeded to chat and we told them all about our Busan vacation. We hung out until around 2am before calling it a night. Blake and I split a cab home, while Dave and Kate stayed at a hotel in Sillim since they live so far away from there.
While at work on Tuesday, we were told that our school is going to be having an open house fun day for the kids August 14th, and that w will have to be a work that Saturday to play game and entertain the kids and their friends. I think the idea of having an open house is good. It will drum up business for the school, and give everyone a chance to interact in a non-academic setting. After work, Jean, Mike and I went out for a couple beers to talk about the open house and some other office stuff. We didn't stay out too long, since Jean had to be in early the next day, and I was pretty wiped from vacation still.
While out on Monday, I got a text from a new friend of mine,Lauren, from South Africa about meeting up Wednesday night to hang out, watch a movie and talk about vacation. So after work on Wednesday I trekked down to Yatap where she lives (in an apartment that makes mine look like a pizza box in an alley that a bum might sleep under) and we proceeded to sit around at her place drinking wine and chatting until 2 or 3. So many late nights between vacation and the start of the week, left me wiped on Thursday. Luckily my schedule is pretty open on Thursdays, so I took the 8 hours of nothingness at work to have a couple naps, and do some reading. I know what you're thinking 'oh how had a life I live', and I completely agree. After work Thursday, I continued my recuperation at home, watching a movie and chilling out with Goah.
Friday, being the only day of the week when I have a semblance of a full schedule, I was busy at work and the time went by quite quickly. After work wrapped up, I headed off to Itaewon to meet up with Lauren and one of her friends at a Jazz Bar. I haven't been to a Jazz Bar in a long time, so it was a good change of pace, though the band was playing music that sounded more reggae than jazz, but still very different and refreshing. We called it quits around 130 to try and find cabs, and beat the rain. A gamble we lost terribly. We were no sooner outside when it started to sprinkle. And that sprinkle quickly turned to a downpour as we tried to find cabs amidst the crowd. After about 15 minutes, we were able to get our own, and head home to dry out and rest up for Saturday's party.
Waking up around 1 Saturday, I took some time to hang out at home before going to meet Blake and Nate at Bangbae for some good weather wondering. We came up with the idea very randomly and thought it wold be a good way to see an area none of us had been to before. I got there around 3, and we just walked around for a while until we came back upon their neighbourhood, where we took a Gatorade break at Blake's and watched some comedy special Nate had on his flash drive. By 6 I left Blake's to get home and shower up before Doug and Rachel's going away party in Itaewon. They were scheduled to have dinner around 830 but I decided to grab some grub on my own before going out. By the time I arrived in Itaewon, they group was already at Roofers having a few drinks. I quickly joined the party with my buddy Rochhi, and got into conversation with everyone. After a while, Doug and Rachel decided they wanted to get their groove on, so we left Roofers and went to Helios. This was the first time I had been to Helios, as I don't frequent Itaewon that often, and it is a popular hangout for army douches. Either way, we went their and it turned out to be a great time. We danced up a storm and stayed there until 5am, when we decided it was time for kebabs and the catch the first subway home.
Home and in bed by 630, I slept until 3 on Sunday before getting up to go meet Blake and JungHun for a baseball game. The game was between the LG Twins (Seoul's team) and the Samseong Lions (Daegu's team), in which the Twins were slaughtered. After the game we headed to Sincheon for some lamb galbi, then since we were in the area, popped over to Gold Bar to say hi. While there Blake got suckered into an armwrestle to which I had refused, and lost, so he had to buy the guy a drink; but in return the guy bought us some nachos. Not wanting to be out too late, we all caught the last subway home at 1130.
And so another week ended. Hope you are all enjoying the summer still.

It's Bad When An Aquarium Has More Swimming Space Than The Beach

July 26 - Aug 1, 2010

It was a short week at work this week, as we only had to work Monday and Tuesday before our summer vacation started. My classes on Monday went smoothly, and were bumped to 40 minutes instead of 30, and then I spent Tuesday sitting around as usual.

After work Monday I took some time to get my laundry done so that I would have clothes to wear while on vacation, and so that I wouldn't have a hap of laundry to do once I got home. On Tuesday with my laundry finished, Emily stopped by to hang out while I packed and then we watched Zombieland, which was an awesome movie.

It was officially go time when my alarm went off Wednesday morning at 7am. I rolled out of bed, packed the last couple odds and ends that I needed and headed to the train station around 750. Unfortunately, I waited until I was leaving my house to call James and he had missed his alarm, so was just getting out of bed. This was not a good way to start, since the train was at 9am and he lives about 45 minutes away via the subway. He said he would d his best to get there, but it was going to be close. Once I got to the train station I met up with Blake and Nate, got our tickets and had some McDonald's breakfast while we waited for James. The train started boarding at 845 and James was still a couple subway stops away, and we were worried he wasn't going to make it.....but then with only 4 minutes to departure, James rounded the corner and sailed down the escalator. He made it!

The three hour ride to Busan went by pretty quick, as I slept most of the way. Once we arrived in Busan we mt up with JungHun at the stations (he decided to tag along at the last minute) and headed off to our minbak at Song Jeong beach. It was a bit overcast and rainy when we arrived so we took some time to grab some fried chicken and beer and have lunch in our room while we waited to see if it would clear. Luckily it did and we went out to the beach to toss the football around, but stayed out of the water because the Koreans are insanely cautious about the water when it is wavy, and would not let us go in. And on a side note, even when the weather was fine or the rest of our vacation, swimmers are not allowed in the water past their chests which i only about 100 feet out in the water. The lifeguards blame the 'undertow' from the waves, but it was seriously annoying not being able to actually swim at the beach. Eventually it started to rain again, so we went back to our room, watched a movie, and then got ready and went to Gwanggali for dinner and drinks. After our dinner, we hit a couple different bars before heading back to our area for one more beer, some kimbap, and then bed.

Waking up Thursday to blue skies and a warm sun, we all wanted to hit the beach for our first full day of vacation. We decided to go to Haeundae beach, because it is the most popular and largest beach in Busan; and that's when we realized how crazy going to the beach in Busan really is. I can sum it up in two words "Parasol City". The beach from Thursday through Sunday, given that it is peak season, is nothing but a sea of beach umbrellas, set up in grid formation, from end to end, waters edge to sidewalk. It left no room for any beach activities like tossing the football or building sand castles, and given that you pretty much have to get an umbrella, it was hard to get any sun unless you were at an edge and sitting in the walk ways. Nonetheless, we had a good Thursday, and managed to get some sun and football time in once people started leaving and we could take down some umbrellas. Also, we made a few friends throughout the day. One was a girl named Kensie (sp?), a douche kyopo named Steve, and two Korean girls whose names I never got but who we ended up drinking with later. We left the beach and went back to Song Jeong to get showered and out of our swim stuff, grabbed a burger from a place called Blowfish, which had won the latest burger competition, then headed back to Haeundae for another night out. We met up with the girls from earlier, and shockingly another girl named Ashlee that I went to University with. We had some drinks at a western style bar then headed to noraebang to finish off the night.

Then the drama began. Nate had been at a poker tournament, and had wanted Blake to get the Korean girls out so he could talk with them more, but he took so long to get there that Blake was already building a good rapport with one of them and Nate took that personally. He threw a bit of a tantrum and stormed off back to our area instead of noraebanging. We were fine with it and caught up with him a couple hours later, smashed on the beach, and tried to get him to relax and go to bed. It took a bit longer than we had hoped, and by the time we crashed, the sun was coming up.

I got up Friday at 1030 and wanted to get out an see something cultural, given Busan was a main naval hub during the Korean War. I checked out the map I had and decided the UN Memorial Cemetery was going to be my first stop. I took off to catch the bus to that side of town and quickly realized how hot it was going to be that day. I got to the cemetery a little after noon and spent a couple hours walking around and checking out the monuments donated by the countries involved, before heading back to the beach. I had wanted to see some more but given how hot it was, and that Blake and Nate were leaving Friday night, I wanted to get some more time in with them. Getting back to the beach around 4 I hung out with them briefly before they packed it in and headed home. Then shortly after that, James, JungHun, and I also packed it in for dinner. James and I decided to skip the cold awkward shower where we were staying, and instead hit up a jimjilbang (sauna) for a warm shower and a dip in the hot tub. Feeling refreshed the three of us went out for some galbi, then cruised back down the beach for a coke and some fireworks. Friday night we kept it quite chill, because James and I had big plans in the morning involving a certain 70's movie creature and scuba diving.

If you haven't guessed it, we were going to go scuba diving with sharks. Waking up at 930 Saturday morning, James JungHun, and I switched to a smaller room because Blake and Nate had left. Then James and I headed out to Haeundae at 1030 to make it to the Busan Aquarium by 11. We waited at the aquarium for everyone to show up and the went in with the instructor. There was a quick rules and regulations talk, followed by some diving instructions for those that were not certified divers. Since James and I were, it was a good time to just zone out. After everyone was up to speed on what was going to happen, we headed to the tank to get our gear on and get in the water. Once we were in the shallow warm up pool above the aquarium where the sharks are on display, again James and I just hung out while the others learned about their equipment. Eventually everyone was ready and we took the plunge into the main tank. It was really cool being in a tank with live sharks. There were Sand Tiger Sharks also called Nurse Sharks, Blacktip Reef Sharks, a Leopard Shark, a couple large Australian groupers, a Manta Ray (I think), and some other smaller fish. We got the the bottom of the tank and walked around looking at the sharks, and getting pretty close to them when they felt inclined to come check us out. We were under strict rules to not touch them, which was fine by me. It was also real cool to be on the inside of the tank while other aquarium goes watched in awe from the other side of the glass. On top of seeing the sharks, we were allowed to search for and keep the shark teeth from inside the tank. We stayed down for abut 25 minutes, then resurfaced and got out of the tank around 4. James and I stayed in our swim shorts and went straight outside o catch the last couple hours of sunlight before heading back to shower.

Once back in Song Jeong, we grabbed a shower at the jimjilbang then killed some beers in our room before dinner. Again we had galbi for dinner, then headed back to Haeundae because JungHun really wanted to go clubbing. We ended up meting with the same Korean girls from Thursday at a club playing house music, dancing our butts off until the sun was coming up. I'm not sure what time it was exactly, but we crashed in the day light and had to get up and out at noon. So without a whole lot of sleep we got up and packed up at exactly noon. Not wanting to carry our bags around, we decided it would be best to just chill on the beach until our train at 6. And that's what we did. James and I rented beach lounge chairs and sat around for he afternoon while JungHun went to meet up with some family. We left the beach a 5 so that we could make it to our train on time, but little did we know, everyone else was doing the same. We got stuck in traffic and almost missed our train. Making it with 2 minutes to spare, James and I never even picked up our tickets, we just ran down and jumped onto the train. This action created a new problem, we didn't know where our seats were. To fix this, we asked one of the train attendants to help. She was able to find us seats, but since we hadn't picked up our tickets, meaning I never signed the Visa receipt for them, we didn't actually have seats. Quickly we scrambled put together enough money to buy the seats she had found for us before the next station so that we didn't get kicked off. We had just enough, gave it to her, then settled in for the 3 hour ride back to Seoul. Once back it was straight home for a good shower and some sleep.

Another week well spent, hope yours was a good one too.
