"All you can eat" destroyer

Since this week was the last week of the month many of us were laying low since we don't get paid until the 30th of every month. It was a bit of a blessing though because I was feeling under the weather most of the week. Between the changing weather, the germ ridden kids at school and all the late nights, I had a bit of a sore throat most of the week. So the rest was well needed.
The week at school went pretty quickly, and painlessly because for the better half of the week I was doing speaking presentations with the kids so I didn't have to teach much. One of the most exciting parts of the week was on Thursday when I had to break up my first "fight". I use the quotation marks because it was more of a shoving dispute between the two boys than an actual fist throwing fight. They were two boys from one of my lowest level classes who are both pretty tiny and for the most part quiet, but something happened and they thought they might like to push at each other. SO, being the only teacher around I just pulled them apart to either side of the hall and hollered loud enough to get their attention, told them to knock it off and send them out to the bus one at a time. I thought about taking them to the office but figured it wasn't worth it for me or anyone else since it wasn't that big a deal.
Friday came and work was finished but everyone was tired and dragging ass so instead of going out we went home and got some rest. Saturday morning I got up and met with Blake and Jameson to walk around Apgujong for a bit, and play some pool, before we went to Gongnam for dinner reservations at a place called Brazilia, an all you can eat steak house. This place was like heaven to us. It was probably only the 3rd or 4th time I have ever felt full at after eating and stayed full into the night since I've been here. The steaks were pretty good cuts and thickness, they were served all you can eat sides like potato salad, rice, and a pepper and tomato salad. We (all 9 of us) were all in heaven and ate until they closed the kitchen. In the end, to everyone's disgust, I ate 6 steaks and a ton of sides, because when they say all you can eat I do just that. I'm just not sure they had the appetite of an active foreigner in mind when they said that.
Once we were finished dinner, half of the party went to Hongdae for a concert, while the other half went back to Apgujong to meet up with Junk and a few friends for drinks. I was one of the ones who went to Apgujong to meet up with Junk because I knew Hongdae was going to be an all-nighter and I was not interested in that. We went to one of our usual spots called Crazy W.C. Bar, where they know and love us and always do flare shows and competitions between the bartenders that you can bet on to win a 26 oz. of tequila. Wouldn't you know it, we won. We stayed until around 130 before the bottle of tequila we won was gone and then called it a night.
Having had an early night on Saturday, I got up at a decent time on Sunday and met with Blake in Insa-dong, the traditional area of Seoul, where Blake wanted to buy some gifts to take home with him. We walked around and looked at stuff for a few hours and got some prices before we decided to leave and meet up with Jameson and Brian to catch a movie. We went all the way back to Cheonho, Jameson's and Brian's neighbourhood and watched the movie Slumdog Millionaire. It was a pretty good movie and a good way to end the weekend.
Hope everyone is doing well back home and getting ready for the warmer spring weather.

Mark the desk abuser

This week I found a new love in slapping the desks of kids who are not paying attention, not working, or who are writing on the desks. I have done it in the past, but this past week I was sure I was going to break my hand with the force I was slapping the desks. It may not be the best thing to do but it sure does get the kids attention long enough for me to give them trouble for whatever they were doing. it seems to be effective for the time being but we will see how it pans out in the coming weeks. The work week went by pretty quickly and Jameson and I returned to the gym which made us feel much better about ourselves.
On Friday we all went out to a bar very close to both ours and the elementary school because it was a trifecta of birthday parties. There were three teachers (2 foreign, and one Korean) from the elementary campus with birthdays in a few day span so we had one big celebration. We were even able to get Dustin, the teacher from California at our school, to come out which was huge because he is not a big outing guy and has turned us down since we got here. He is beginning to realize, i think, that life is too boring if you just sit in your apartment every night. We had a great time and stayed out until around 330 chatting and doing some karaoke.
On Saturday I had big plans to get out and see some of the city because the weather was absolutely gorgeous. Infact, it was in the mid to high teens all week and weekend. Unfortunately plans got messed up and it became too late in the day to get out and about before everyone wanting to have dinner, and get ready to go out for the night. So I scrapped the outing plan, had a nap and waited for dinner confirmation from Blake.
We ended up meeting in Sincheon with Garret, Brian, Jameson, and Margaret for Dak Galbi (chicken stir-fry) and some beers at Garret's since he is leaving very soon. After Garret's we headed to Apgujong to meet up with Junk, Gina, and a gaggle of others. In total there were about 15 of us once Anne showed up around 12 and Charles showed up, against everybody's will, around 1. We stayed at the low key bar for a while until some of the group had to go home and others wanted to go to Monkey Beach, a dance club in the area. We went dancing until around 330, when some of us decided to head out and others decided to head to another bar. I was one of the ones who left and on the way home saw a car on its roof on the highway. There were no serious injuries that I could see of and there was no sense of panic amongst the police so my cab driver just drove around it and kept on going.
Sunday was spent hanging out in bed watching TV and movies before cleaning up a little and calling home to check in.
Hope you are all having a good week. Talk to you soon.

No guests allowed.

Well we found out this week that our new motto should be "no guests allowed", especially those who are big fans of drinking.
Jameson has a couple friends who are teaching illegally in China right now, and since they are teaching illegally they can only stay for 60 days at a time before they have to leave and go on vacation fora few days. After they are out of the country for a few days they can reenter and apply for another 60 day travel visa. So where do you go when you have to leave China? Well Korea of course. So on Monday morning Scott and Kate, Jameson's friends cam to town and it was the beginning of a long week.
During the afternoons they would sight see by themselves since we had to be at work, but every night we we felt the need to show them a good time. Monday night we stayed local and got beers near Jameson's place and got to know everyone......until 4 am. Tuesday we took them to Itaewon for some Thai food. They really wanted Greek but the best Greek place was closed. After Itaewon was closing at 2 we took them to Gangnam for Soju cocktails and beer......until 4 am. Wednesday was their last day here so we took them out after work to Sincheon for Kalbi (Korean barbecue) and then, of course, more beers. WE called it an early night though since they had to be on the bus back to the airport by 930 Thursday morning.
So after they left we all took a well deserved day off on Thursday and got some rest since we all felt worse than garbage. It was nice to have visitors because it made us realize how much we have done, or haven't done, and how much we know about the country and were able to share. But, since they were on vacation it was a little tough on the liver and doesn't need to be repeated anytime soon.
On Friday we were still feeling a little rough around the edges so instead of going to the gym Jameson and I went to Techno Mart to get him a new cell phone, which worked to varying success. He was able to get information on getting a phone plan, but since he bought Lindsey's phone from her when she left there is a bunch of plan changing that is going to take some time so he is going to have to wait another week. Friday night we met up with Blake and Nathan in Gangnam for some dinner and a couple beers. Luckily nobody was into partying to hard and we just drank casually until about 230 then went home.
Saturday was a bit of a shocker. I say a bit because Jameson had been predicting it for a couple weeks, but after we went home Friday night he called his girlfriend who is back in L.A. and broke up with her. They have been on pretty shaky terms for a while and he decided it was that time. So..........what did this mean? It meant he wanted to go out and drink on Saturday. No different from any other Saturday except he planned on going over the top. We decided to go to Itaewon, yet again, since some of our friends were going to be there and because it was St. Patrick's Day weekend, so we were told.
Luckily we got to the usual bar before it was too packed and settled in with some green beer. Shortly after we got there my friend Anne showed up and came to hangout with us. We all had some drinks and a pretty good time until around 3 when most of us were ready to head home. We went out to the main street to get shwarma and cabs, which may have been more fun than the whole night at the bar. On Sunday most of us were up and mobile by mid afternoon, so Jameson and I got together for lunch and then went to met up with Blake to check out Korea's largest fish market. It is 6600 square metres and has row after row of booths selling mostly live fish of every edible variety. It was late when we got there and most of it was closed so we have planned on going back in the near future. Not so much for the fish, but for the chance to eat live octopus. There are lots of places you can do it but we figure its freshest at the fish market. So keep a look out for that post in the future.
Well enough is enough, I have to wrap it up and get off to bed.
Talk to you all soon.

Back in touch on so many levels.

Well I got the Internet for myself this week and spent a couple hours on Thursday updating the blogs I missed but left out what I had been doing that week, so here it is.
So Monday was the start of a new semester, and what's a good way to start a new semester? How about with a threatening speech from your school director! It was both weird and off putting all at once. We (the foreign teachers) were told to meet in a room where we were supposed to have a meeting with our head Korean teacher for a talk. Instead our director Kayla, who's English is mediocre at best comes in and give us the "Jameson is in charge, and Hye-Jin above him. If you have any problems I will write you up and then fire you and you will never get a job in Korea again", speech. Might I mention she was also staring at me the whole time. We think it was sparked by the unrest on of the other foreign teachers felt about not getting the job since she is Korean-American and speaks good Korea, but she was hesitant when they asked her so they moved onto Jameson. Most of us laughed it off and didn't worry too much about it, while others got kind of offended. But in the end what is there really to do about it.
So the week progressed and on Thursday I got hooked back into the World Wide Web at home. I had had it at work of course but I try not to abuse the free time I get by blogging and such at work. For most of the week we all laid low and saved it for the weekend. Then on Friday Brian and I met with Blake, Junk and some other new friends of Blake's for drinks in Blake's area. I shouldn't really say Blake's friends though because only one was a friend and the others were friends of hers. They turned out to be alright to hang out with and we drank casually until 5 am before calling it a night.
The late nights always turn into late mornings but what can you do. Saturday was a bit of a mix and match day as to what everyone was going to do because we had all semi-committed to different things. Jameson had said he would go to a birthday party in Itaewon after a apartment warming for one of the new elementary teachers. Blake had committed to getting together with Junk in Apgujong after dinner with a girl he met a few weeks ago. Myself, I had said I would make an appearance in Apgujong before heading to Itaewon to meet a girl by the name of Anne I have been talking with for the last couple weeks (and by talking with I mean playing phone tag with). It was her birthday and her and her friends were going to be there. Luckily Brian was the least committed of us and agreed to go with me to Itaewon to meet up with Anne and her friends so that I wasn't a lone soldier.
As it turned out Jameson and some of the elementary teachers showed up at the same place so we had a solid group dynamic. I met up with Anne and her friends and we all had a good time. Eventually we had a chance to sit alone for a while and shoot the shit over a couple drinks. Turns out she is really awesome and is from Brampton and went to Laurier........small world. It was nice to be able to sit down with someone other than the guys and chat. Next thing we knew it was 5 am again and time to head out. We all went our separate way, Jameson and I shared a cab since Brian and Brady had left about an two hours before us. Again the late night turned into a late morning, but Jameson, Brian, Blake and I got together for dinner Sunday and then we all retired early to get some rest before the next week started.
We are looking forward to this coming week because Jameson has friends coming from China for a few days so there is bound to be some more wildness than we need.
Hope all is going well back home and that everyone is staying healthy or healing fast.....my mom told me there has been some mishaps as of late.
Love and miss you all.

It was an Internet blackout. Part 2

This blog will cover the week of February 23-March 1.
Well this week was just as one would expect the last week of a semester to be. The kids had completely checked out as well as us teachers. Who could blame them though. The material was terrible and you can only do a task so many times before you want to freak out, which is exactly what is happening in this country. They are not raising educated kids as much as they are creating robots who can answer standardized tests. The books for this past semester were repetition of filling in the blanks that were both too easy and far from what the kids will be faced with on the test. We have hopes for better books in the upcoming semester but with the education systems in this country being behind those in the west it will probably be some years until the education system finds its proper balance.
And i digress......
The rest of the week was pretty good.
On Thursday we went out for lunch with Lindsey, our head foreign teacher, since it was her last week with us. Replacing her is going to be Jameson. You might wonder "hey Mark, why not you?" So to that I must remind you to think hard about who I am. I am a pot stirring asshole, who will tell you how is is rather than bend to your will. I like things to be done right instead of confusing and repeated. So Jameson was the next in line and a rather good choice. He has however chosen me as his Secretary of Defense because I stand fast on my policy of "if you have a problem F-Off. It's going to be a good term.
Well on Friday we were all ready to get out of the office and away from the kids and stress of an upcoming semester. Also, I was a little psyched because I was possibly meeting up with a semi-blind date Friday in Hongdae. She was a girl I met the night of Brady's birthday in Itaewon, and we had planned to go out for a few beers if possible. Unfortunately, I missed her call due to a farewell party at work for Lindsey and when I tried to call back she had left home already. C'est la vie. Jameson and I went to Hongdae anyways to meet Blake, Junk, and Charles. We stayed for a few hours but took off before it got too late. We got a ride home from one of Junks friends at which time Charles fell asleep on Jameson's shoulder..........awkward.
Saturday started out as a personal day. I slept late, then got up and cleaned my apartment, did the dishes, and just hungout watching saved episodes on my computer. I wasn't planning on going out until Blake phoned me around 9 and said he was at a social club and wanted me to go meet everyone. This club was an organized platform for language exchange. There were Korean men and women in their 20's and foreign men and women, mostly men, who wanted to meet people and exchange mostly English. Even though it was far away from my end of town I went anyways. I showed up to a mix of people most of which had been drinking for a while and were very social. I sat down and talked with lots of different people over the next few hours and did my best to help Blake wrangle some of the better looking girls. It was a good night and we have been invited back to future gatherings and even asked for outside meetings. Making friends left, right, and center around here.
On Sunday Jameson, Brian and I met up with Lindsey and a couple of the Korean teachers at our school for lunch in Anguk, a traditional area of town with some great museums and palaces. We had a very traditional Korean lunch and then went to a tea house before walking around for a bit. After we split up Jameson and i went to check out a well known spa called Happy Days Spa. One of our co-workers always goes and we thought why not. We wanted to hit a sauna and get a massage but when we got to the place nobody would help us and we walked around pretty much lot for a while. Eventually we found some saunas and the massage room. It was a two hour wait for a massage so we settled for a quick sauna and a sit in a outdated massage chair. They had nicer ones but they were all taken. After our disappointing time at the spa we went for some dinner and resolved to give it another go later the next month.
Well there we go I am all caught up on my Blogs and you are all caught up on my life hither.
I've got some big plans for getting out and doing some more photo taking soon so that I can get some more albums up on facebook.
Take Care and thanks for reading.

It was an Internet blackout. Part 1

Well its about to be a blog-tastic night.
For those of you who have been keeping up with my blogs, I have been without the Internet for the last couple weeks so this post will cover the week of February 16-22. As an explanation for my tardiness, I had been sharing my Internet with a couple across the hall from me who were teaching at the elementary school beside us. But, since their contracts were up and they had to head out their Internet was canceled and I had to get my own. However, since it was the end of a semester things were a little wild around the office so it slipped my mind the first week and we were all too busy to worry about it the second week getting ready for the start of the next semester.
So what have I been doing?
Well the week in question was a pretty quiet. I have semi-resolved to stop going out too late during the week so that I don't have to miss any gym days and so that I don't damage my bank account and liver any further. On Friday we went out with the teachers from the elementary school for Sam and Allison's last drinks. We went to a bar called Zenia, which is super cheap and has a great space for accommodating large groups. We stayed pretty late and had some good laughs as they said their good-byes.
The next day was Brady's birthday. He is one of the elementary teachers. So Jameson, Brian, Blake and myself went to Itaewon to party with him. It was a good time, we started with dinner and then moved to a couple different bars throughout the night. Around 230 everyone started heading out so what did we do? Under the influence of Blake and Jameson we went back to Justin Bar.............yeah that was the hooker bar we had visited previously. See Blake thought he had something going with one of the girls the first time so he wanted to drop in again. Nothing hookerish just friend like. That's when things got crazy. She asked Blake why he wasn't buying her drinks and Blake answered "because he isn't interested in supporting the hooker industry" (not in those exact words). To this she got terribly offended and stormed off. Then instead of saving face and leaving Blake bought her a drink and left it at the bar so when she came back from having her pout he could say "hey I bought you a drink, never talk to me again." This was a little wild so we all finished our beers and took off.
Waking up Sunday we laughed about it and then got ready for another night out. That's right it as a party weekend. Sunday night was our friend Charles the Adulterers birthday. So we went to Apgujong to have dinner and drinks with him, Junk, Gina, and some other friends. It was a good time, we didn't stay late since everyone had to get up in the morning and we had been drinking for 3 days at that point.
Well that sums up one missed week. Coming up is week two.
